Leadership is a quality which is not there in everyone, the one holds it can not necessarily be good at it. When you get into a role of leadership the first expectation you have is to gain respect however it is complicated to balance between gaining respect and creating a threatening environment. Here are a few tips which you may find useful:
Listen: This is the basic you should understand, as a leader you are expected to lead and instruct your people however it does not mean that only you opinion matters, others might have a good idea too. Others will respect you when they know that you listen, analyse and then respond. It is understandable that they will not have anything good for you every time however you might want to keep it for later.Be friendly but do not be a friend: Regular day life’s are very hectic and people don’t get time to discuss about how things are going with them, at such days try to have a cup of coffee with your team. This will help them open up and at the same time since you will not be casual for more than 5 mins it will keep that boundary line. It is advised not to get drunk with your people as you may not be able to control on your actions or words.
Be the Motivator: As a leader people expect you to be great at motivation, your team should work because they want to not because just for the heck of it. When people do something they want to or they like to results always go high. You as their leader is expected to motivate them.
Keep the Smile: Work pressure is normal when it comes to modern-day culture however it is very important to maintain the balance, just keep a smile when you meet or greet your team & eventually you will realize that not only it reduces your stress but it increases their efficiency too. Crack a joke sometime and let your people know that you are human too.
Clear Instructions: As your position is something which requires you to instruct people about their job, be specific about what instructions you are giving. For clear instructions you need to understand the current level of your people as how detailed instructions they need. Also be assured that everyone is allowed to make mistakes and if your team did it then you should perform a quick root cause analysis.
